After recording a split with the also fundamental RIP, Zona Especial Norte, Eskorbuto finished their first album, Eskizofrenia, in 1985. To this stage belongs their delirious performance for La bola de cristal, no less. The classic albums follow: Anti todo, perhaps their best work, with immortal songs of the band, such as Historia triste or Cerebros destruidos; and the legendary Impuesto revolucionario, recorded when this kind of recordings were hardly used in our country.
Los demenciales chicos acelerados comes at a time when Basque punk bands are starting to find new ways for their sounds: Kortatu is between El estado de las cosas and Kolpez Kolpe, La Polla Records has just released their masterpiece Donde se habla, Tijuana in Blue is preparing their first album and late bands of the movement that move in more personal coordinates, such as Zer Bizio? or Yo soy Julio César, are starting to emerge. Eskorbuto’s album flirts with pop and presents a conceptual structure, which La Fonoteca compared to Sandinista! by The Clash: “After releasing their masterpiece, they release their most ambitious work”.

I tell you, the one he used the most was a Suzuki Les Paul that he used with both Zarama and Eskorbuto, I know this because once there was an exhibition of famous guitars in Bilbao and it was there and I took a picture of it, let’s see if I can find it somewhere…
Taken from an old interview: “An orchestra left their guitar to La Polla and Josu kept it. They asked him to give it back but the guitar didn’t move. Since then there was no good relationship. He had it stuck to his ass, he played with it, a numbered Gibson. In the end the Guardia Civil took it away from us after a concert in Navarra in ’87, it was denounced”. On another occasion Juanma tried to steal an amplifier from Tijuana in Blue but he was caught.
It is true that he always used Les Paul imitations, although I don’t know if he got his peculiar sound from the guitar passed through a Roland Jazz Chorus, I have doubts, although I had heard that. Iosu’s sound was certainly not valve-like, although it was devastating and above all recognizable. Which is to say that if you want a good Les Paul you don’t need to buy a Gibson. Iosu at least didn’t need one.
