After studying a degree in Audiovisual Communication, she went to Leioa to take some courses on «Theory, analysis and film documentation», where she met the man who would later become the director of her thesis, Santos Zunzunegui. He suggested the topic and Maialen found it very interesting, so she immediately started her thesis on the Basque filmmaker Antxon Eceiza. Today, Maialen answers our questions as a film expert and coordinator of several sections of the San Sebastian Film Festival, which is about to begin its 60th edition.

That’s right. There were two coordinators. On the one hand there was Luis Iriondo on behalf of Caja Laboral, and on the other hand Antxon Eceiza who, with his production company Bertan Filmeak, coordinated the whole series and directed some short films. He also opened this possibility to many other local directors. For some of them it was their first job and now they are very reputable directors such as Montxo Armendariz or the director of photography Javier Aguirresarobe. It was a technical learning platform for many filmmakers who have gone on to make films in the future.
